A SUMMER fun day is to be staged later this year after a church group was awarded funding.

Consett Churches Together, which includes Consett Methodist Churches, the church of England and Salvation Army, has been awarded almost £3,000 to stage the event.

The family fun day will take place in Consett and Blackhill Park on Saturday, June 29 including inflatables, races, prayer tent and Messy Church.

Funding was announced at the Up 2 U event held at Derwentside College at which members of the public got to vote for which projects should share a £40,000 community fund set up by the Derwent Valley Partnership.

Consett Churches Together first held a family fun day in the park in 2012 and were keen to repeat it following the success of last year’s event.

The Reverend Andy Chislett-McDonald, of Consett Methodist Church, said: "I'm truly delighted that we have been awarded this money.

"The Fun Day last year was such a great event with a real community feel. I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to come along and vote for us."
