A GROUP of amateur dramatists are preparing for the opening night of their latest show.

South Pacific is being performed by Birtley Community Theatre, starting tonight, until Friday.

Rehearsals began in September and is a new venture for most of the cast as many have never performed on stage before.

The Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical intertwines the themes of romance, duty and prejudice and the action takes place on two islands in the South Pacific during World War II.

Retired head of performing arts, from nearby Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy, Kim Hetherington, who developed the idea of the community theatre company, is directing the show.

She said: “The journey has been an amazing project with a wonderful group of people. The theatre has brought people together and I want the world to watch this show. The cast of 30 ranges from ages seven to 70 and has a real community spirit. Birtley Community centre were keen to encourage the theatre group to develop and have offered so much support to the new venture.”

Shows start at 7.15pm at Birtley Community Centre. Tickets are £5.
