A CARE company has praised staff and thanked those who came to their aid during last week's heavy snow.

Embracing Care, based in Sacriston, said carers on numerous occasions trekked for miles to assist clients in inaccessible places. On occasions teams of two were required, as many roads were near to impassable.

Managing director Yvonne Shillock said: "They have truly been through it all this past week and we are so proud of each and everyone of them as well as the office staff who turned in early and stayed late to make sure clients received telephone calls to reassure them.

"No calls were missed and everyone was assisted to carry on with their daily tasks. The families and communities pulled together to assist the elderly and check that everyone was taken care of."

Offers of help to get to calls came in from taxi companies with 4x4 vehicles such as MACS Taxis, and even Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. Health professionals who lived locally also offered their services.

Ms Shillock added: "We are extremely thankful for the generosity of the community and feel privileged to be a part of it."
