AN ELDERLY woman has been left heartbroken after thieves broke into her home in the night and took jewellery given to her by her late husband.

The 92-year-old was extremely shaken up after the burglary, which happened in Sacriston, near Durham, in the early hours of this morning.

Two men from the Sacriston area have been arrested in connection with the break-in at the property in Ashford Drive.

The two males, aged 37 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently in police custody and are being interviewed about the offence.

Sgt Mel Sutherland, of Chester-le-Street neighbourhood policing team, said: "Although two males are currently in police custody in relation to this shocking crime against a vulnerable elderly lady, I would still encourage anyone with information to contact police on 101.

"If you have been offered any jewellery for sale today, or know of someone who has, then please get in touch.

"The jewellery is old and is of significant sentimental value".

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The woman is extremely shaken up by this incident and has been left heartbroken that her jewellery was stolen.

“Some of the jewellery was given to this woman by her late husband when she was just 15-years-old. He was her first boyfriend who she later went on to marry. The pieces are of tremendous sentimental value and she had wanted to give the jewellery to her grandkids.”
