POLICE are continuing to investigate a suspected murder after a woman’s body was found following a house fire.

Offficers were called to an address in Robsons Way, Birtley, near Chester-le-Street on Thursday.

Following formal identification, police are now in a position to name the deceased as 53-year-old Christine Markham.

Investigating officer, Inspector Paul Waugh said: “Inquiries to establish the circumstances around Christine’s death are ongoing.

“A 61-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death on Thursday but he has since been released under investigation.

“Christine’s family are currently being supported by specialist liaison officers at what is an incredibly difficult time for them.

“Police will continue to have a visible presence in the area around the address to reassure anyone who has any concerns but there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.”

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended the fire at 11.30pm on Thursday to discover a fire in the loft of the three-storey house.

Crews were in the process of putting out the flames when they found the body of Mrs Markham. The loft was severely damaged.
