A SWIMMER is celebrating after winning a clutch of medals at a national championships.

Alex Mason, 16, of the Chester-le-Street Swimming Club won gold in the 50m backstroke on the first day of the British Summer Championships.

He backed it up with backed it up with silver medals in the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 50m butterfly, where he missed a second gold by just 1/100th of a second.

The club enjoyed great success at the championships held in Sheffield Ponds Forge Centre, also fielding qualifiers Lauren Graham, 18, Taryn Wheat, 15, and two debutants at this level - Hannah Wright, 14, Thomas English, 13.

In the second week of the competition Taryn claimed 16th place in the 50m freestyle and Thomas 14th on his first national appearance.

Hannah finished 10th in the final of the 200m backstroke.

In the final day of competition Thomas won silver in the 50m butterfly.

The club will be nomadic in the autumn while improvements are carried out at the Chester-le-Street Leisure Centre.
