AN animal welfare charity has appealed for information after reports of cats being poisoned in a village.

The RSPCA is investigating after suspected poison was being left out in Carlton Close, Ouston, near Chester-le-Street.

A photograph taken by a cat owner shows a piece of chicken a pet has brought home.

The meat has string attached and crystals inside of it.

Members of the public have been urged to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their cats. The signs of poisoning can include one vomiting, seeming sleepy, appearing uncoordinated, having seizures or difficulty breathing

RSPCA inspector Cathy Maddison said: “It’s very concerning to hear that poisoned meat has been found.

“The cat that brought this piece of poisoned meat back home is lucky to be alive and is still under vet treatment.

“Anyone with any information about this incident can leave me a message in complete confidence via our inspector’s appeal line number by phoning 0300 123 8018.”
