PLANS for a new housing estate have been recommended for approval despite concerns over increased traffic next to a village school.

Developers Prince Bishops Homes are asking for permission to build 24 homes in Sacriston.

The proposals are for a 0.5-hectare paddock off St Cuthbert’s Drive and would be made up of a cul-de-sac featuring 14 three-bed homes and 10 four-bed homes.

However, the head teacher of the village primary school has voiced concerns about the increase in traffic at the junction with Front Street.

Planning officers have recommended that the application be approved, subject to a number of conditions, including archaeological investigations relating to a prehistoric burial site nearby.

Members of Durham County Council’s Area Planning committee will vote on the application on Thursday.
