ROADWORKS on a busy commuter route are to run into a second week.

Work to repair gas mains on the A167 between Durham and Chester-le-Street were due to be completed this week.

But Northern Gas Networks say the repairs have overrun because of the complexity of the work and will now continue until Wednesday.

Work is taking place between Pity Me roundabout and Plawsworth roundabout.

Engineers have completed work on the southbound carriageway, but the inside lane of the northbound carriageway remains closed to traffic.

Site manager Andy Coates said: "We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may experience as we continue this essential gas mains repair work and thank everyone for their patience and support as we complete it quickly as possible.

“The safety of the public and our engineers is our number one priority and in order for us to carry out the repair as quickly and safely as we can, we'll need to keep the northbound carriageway closure in place until the middle of next week."
