A GROUP of football supporters have raised almost £5,000 for a North-East cancer charity.

Members of the Chester-le-Street branch of Sunderland AFC Supporters’ Association have handed over a cheque for £4697.30 to Lady Elsie Robson.

The cash was raised throughout the year with a range of event in aid of Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which was set up by her late husband.

It was handed over at an event at Sacriston Workingman’s Club, near Chester-le-Street, earlier this month.

It is latest in a long line of charitable donations presented by Kevin and Alison and their team of charity fundraisers.

The money was raised at two music nights at the Sacriston social club and an annual summer weekend trip away with 177 men to Chester races, Liverpool and Wakefield.

Mr Atkinson said: “The foundation was set up in Sir Bobby's name to raise funds for cancer research and has been very successful, raising over £10m in the few short years since Sir Bobby's death.

“We have been raising money for just over 20 years now, and in that time have donated tens of thousands of pounds to such worthy charities as Help For Heroes, St Cuthbert's Hospice, Great North Air Ambulance, Macmillan Nurses and the Special Care Baby Unit at Durham University Hospital to name a few.”
