A NEW scheme to help people get to work or training by providing them with much-needed transport has been officially launched.

The scheme Wheels to Work is aimed at ensuring that travelling is not a barrier for those starting in their new role or training.

It has been funded by Chester-le-Street, Stanley and Mid Durham Area Action Partnerships (AAPs), with a £50,000 grant contribution from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP).

Anyone aged 16 years or over who lives in these areas and who has a provisional licence, will be able to hire one of 30 mopeds.

They will have the the option to borrow either a 50cc moped for £25 a week, or a 125cc for £30 a week.

The cost covers Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), protective clothing, a heavy duty lock, insurance, breakdown cover, servicing and maintenance of the moped.

After the loan period, and in partnership with the local Credit Union, there may be an option to buy the moped.

Launching scheme at Bullion Hall, in Chester-le-Street, yesterday, Durham County Council leader Cllr Simon Henig said: “I know this scheme is gong to make a real difference.

“There are particular challenges for people without a car to get to work or training, particularly for young people and the low-waged living in more rural areas.”

He said, for example, to get to somewhere like Doxford Park, in Sunderland, from Chester-le-Street, could require up to three buses and an hour’s travel., preventing people from taking advantagte of new opportunities.

Cllr Henig said: “Wheels to Work can and will hopefully be part of a longer-term solution that can allow us to address these transport barriers and help people get access to jobs and training.

“For employers it’s good as well, because it means there is a wider pool of people who can take advantage of job opportunities.”

After working on similar schemes in Derbyshire, staff from Rural Action Derbyshire will now be based in County Durham to deliver the project here.

Wheels to Work project officer Gina Davies said: “There are many benefits associated with the scheme.

“It’s not just a brand-new vehicle but there are lots of personal and social benefits, as well - improved independence and improved mobility and all the social benefits that come with that.”
