HUNDREDS of people are expected to watch the switch-on of a town’s new Christmas lights.

The traditional event will take place in Chester-le-Street on Thursday, December 1 at 4pm in the Market Place when the town’s new lights make their debut

Three winners of this year’s Chester-le-Street and District Business Association Christmas drawing competition will have the job of pressing the switch.

Entries are welcome until November 26 and can be dropped off at Café Neena’s, the Computer Centre or Wilkinson’s in the town centre.

Entertainment will include the Drama Tree and the Ice Sisters, performing a selection of songs including many festive favourites, stiltwalkers, the Police Interceptors and the town crier.

The Police Interceptors, as seen on Channel 5’s TV series, will be joined by The Rock Choir, North East Concert Band and Churches Together.

Parking in all council-run car parks in Chester-le-Street will be free after 3pm throughout December.

Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership (AAP) town centre task group are funding the event.

Joyce Roberts, Chair of Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership, said: “This event brings people together to celebrate this festive time of year and mark the beginning of Christmas”.

“Getting the Police Interceptors there is a real coup alongside all the entertainment we are providing.

“Investment in new Christmas lights and having the free after three initiatives all combine to make it a very merry Christmas for local people and businesses.”
