MORE than 240 people attended a fund raising night in memory of a girl who died of cancer as a teenager.

The event at the Salvation Army Citadel in Chester-le-Street was attended by Councillor Tracie Smith and Kevan Jones MP to raise money for the Sara’s Hope Foundation.

The charity was launched in 2007, inspired by Sara Hoburn who died in 2001, aged just 16, after a two-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of colon cancer.

Since then, more than 70 children living with cancer and their families have experienced a special family break at Sara’s retreat in Crete.

Entertainment on the night was provided by the Durham Miners Brass Band and singing duo Kirstie Swirles and Fiona Havercroft.

Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham said: “I was pleased to attend such a wonderful event that raised over £3,500 for the Sara’s Hope Foundation.”

County Councillor Tracie Smith said: “Sara was so brave and touched the hearts of so many people.

“This was a first class evening of entertainment and it was great to see so many local residents supporting this event.”
