A MAN is in a serious condition in hospital after being assaulted on a night out over the Easter weekend.
The 54-year-old was out in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, with his wife and friends on Saturday night (March 26) when police believe they became involved in a dispute with a gang of youths near the Queens Head pub on Front Street at about 8.30pm.
The man, who lives locally, was assaulted and fell to the ground.
He was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.
The following day, police arrested at 16-year-old boy, who has since been interviewed and released on bail pending further enquiries.
Inspector Paul Gray, of Durham Police, said: “An investigation is ongoing and we are following up a number of potential leads.
“If there is anyone who was in the area on Saturday night and may have witnessed what happened, I would urge them to come forward and help our enquiries.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
