A MAN is in a serious condition in hospital after being assaulted in the centre of Chester-le-Street on Saturday night.

The 54-year-old victim was out in the town with his wife and friends.

Police said at around 8.30pm it appeared they became involved in a dispute with a number of youths on Front Street in the vicinity of the Queens Head and Subway premises.

The man, who lives locally, fell to the ground after being assaulted and was taken to hospital by ambulance with a serious head injury.

The following day, police arrested and interviewed a local 16-year-old youth in relation to the assault.

This person has been released on bail whilst the investigation continues.

Insp Paul Gray said; “An investigation is ongoing and we are following up a number of potential leads.

"If there is anyone who was in the area on Saturday night and may have witnessed what happened, I would urge them to come forward and help our enquiries.”
