CUB scouts from the North-East have celebrated the organisation’s centenary year with a visit to London Zoo.

Youngsters from Chester-le-Street, Gateshead and Washington cubs were invited to London for a two-day adventure in London, including an exclusive tour of the zoo and an overnight stay in the bug house.

In total, 44 cub scouts and 22 volunteers took part in the Wildest Birthday Ever event to mark 100 years of the organisation.

Charlie Nicholson, from 3rd Washington Scout Group, said, “I like Cubs because we have lots of adventure and lots of fun.

“I’ve been camping and climbing, nothing is ever boring.”

Rebecca Corkindale, also from Washington, added: “Every week is action packed with lots of fun and adventure and there is always lots to do.

“One of the best things I have done is on a two-night camp where we slept outdoors. I like getting my wildlife badge and I’m looking forward to sleeping in the bug house.”

Adult volunteer Gemma Younghusband said, “Being involved as an adult volunteer in Scouting is brilliant. To see the young people achieving something for the first time always brings a smile to my face.”
