DOZENS of motorcyclists took to the saddle today (Sunday, September 20) to deliver much-needed pet food to animal sanctuaries throughout the North-East.

More than 80 bikers joined a convoy that set off from the Whitehills pub in Waldridge Road, Chester-le-Street, County Durham. They were accompanied by two van loads of food.

The event was organised by the 30-strong Dragonslayer Motorcycle Club, which meets at the pub.

Club vice chairman Trevor Robinson said: “The day has been a phenomenal success. We couldn’t have hoped for better. This is the second run we have done and plan to make it an annual event."

He added: “We approached supermarkets, pet shops and independent stores asking for donations and were absolutely overwhelmed with the response.

“There have been personal donations from those taking part as well."

The convoy was joined by members of the Twisted Sprockets Motorcycle Club of East Boldon and the Gypsy Rebels Motorcycle Club from Hetton-le-Hole, as well as by independent riders.

The convoy made its first delivery at Bryson’s Animal Refuge in Gateshead, before making its way to Cleadon Kennels on South Tyneside and finally on to the Tendercare Cattery in Burnhope, County Durham.

Everyone then then returned to Whitehills pub where members of Dragonslayer Motorcycle Club hosted a barbecue to thank those who took part.
