MEMBERS of an air training corps are celebrating after receiving a grant for a new minibus.

The 1507 (Chester-le-Street) Squadron Air Training Corps was awarded £30,000 by the Armed Forces Community Covenant.

Chris Watson, chairman of the civilian committee for corps, said: “This minibus will now give all of our cadets more opportunities to travel to core activities including flying, shooting, adventure training and Duke of Edinburgh Award events.

“We are also now able to plan more fun activities and travel further afield.

“We are very grateful for the generosity of the Armed Forces Community Covenant.”

Committee secretary Kerri Watson was also instrumental in securing the grant, while Ford Direct gave the corps a forces’ discount.

The cash was also used to buy a selection of media equipment.

Corps commanding officer Flight Lieutenant Dave Brown said: “The ultimate aim of the Air Training Corps is to promote a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force, also to foster the spirit of adventure, develop leadership skills, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-discipline and to help the local community.”

The cadets can gain a BTEC 1st Diploma in Public Services (equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A-C grade).
