A SWIMMING club is hoping to make a big splash in its anniversary year with a new sponsor.

Chester-le-Street Amateur Swimming Club has marked its 40th anniversary by agreeing a year-long sponsorship deal with local law firm Gordon Brown.

The club, which boasts 2012 Olympic semi-finalist Steph Proud among its swimmers, was named county champions last year and this year had three qualifiers for the British championships.

Club secretary and Gordon Brown team leader Wendy Frame said: “Our swimmers perform extremely well with the water time and facilities that are available to them, however the cost of pool hire is continually increasing.

“I teach at the club on a voluntary basis and my children also train there so it’s extremely rewarding to be able to give back to an organisation I feel so passionate about.

“Gordon Brown is dedicated to investing in the local community so this is the perfect fit.”

The sponsorship means the club can extend the number of swimming sessions, organise targeted swimming courses and eventually a swimming camp – all of which will have a long-term impact on the development of young talent.

Head Coach Gary Renshaw said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the commitment from the team at Gordon Brown Law Firm, which will prove invaluable in helping us towards our ambitious plans.

“This year, six of our swimmers are attending the Beacon Programme, compared to three last year.

“We’re already the best club in County Durham, but we’re aiming to be best in the North East and even in England.”
