HUNDREDS of sci-fi fans, many in fancy dress, are expected to attend a town's first comic and gaming convention.

Fresh from the sell-out success of last year’s KingCon event in Durham, when hundreds of sci-fi and superhero fans took over the Gala Theatre, organisers are to stage the DiddyCon Comic and Gaming Convention in Chester-le-Street next month.

Dark Matters Cafe and Events are to stage the geek convention on Saturday, August 8, with hundreds of fans taking part, most of them dressed as their favourite comic book character.

The day will feature fancy dress characters, role play, comic workshops with local artists, card gaming sessions, and inflatable interactive games; allowing visitors to throw themselves into the comic book world.

Among the stars of the show will be the 1989 Batmobile, complete with fully-functioning flame throwers and roaring engine, from the Batman film starring Michael Keaton.

Dan Pye, director of Dark Matters Events said he was looking forward to seeing audiences young and old, geeky or curious enjoy the experience.

He said: “We see this event developing social and community engagement, where people can gather in their masses to immerse themselves, to play, to be involved, and feel part of something great for the community.”

The event takes place at Park View Community Association in Church Chare from 10am to 4pm and tickets are £3 per person.

Organisers have been working with Durham County Council’s Area Action Partnership to stage the event, which will also feature merchandise and memorabilia for sale, as well as competitions throughout the day.

Andrew Megginson, AAP co-ordinator, said: “We are really pleased to have this kind of event taking place in Chester-le-Street.

“This is a new venture for us and is something different for the area and we hope that it appeals to all members of the family in this summer holiday period.

“It would be great to see Chester-le-Street as a recognised venue for this kind of event.”

Tickets are available online at www.diddycon.co.uk, in person at Dark Matter Cafe in Crossgate, Durham and from Park View Community Association.

The larger KingCon event will return to the Gala Theatre on October 11.
