LEADING experts on the First World War are to speak at a conference to mark the centenary of the conflict.

The Durham branch of The Western Front Association has organised the event taking place later this year in Chester-le-Street.

Retired professor John Derry, formerly of Newcastle University, will chair the one-day conference which takes place at the Cornerstones centre in North Burns on Saturday, September 5.

Peter Hart from the Imperial War Museum will discuss the Gallipoli campaign, Dr Borislav Chernev of Newcastle University will talk about Russian and the Eastern Front, Dr Scott Lindgren, of Hull University will debate the War at Sea, while Dr Matthias Strohn, of the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, will highlight Germany’s defensive strategy during 1915.

The conference takes place from 10am to 4.30pm and includes a number of exhibitions from Beamish Museum, Bowes Museum and the DLI Museum.
