PRIMARY school pupils will visit their local secondary school next week to take part in an innovative science project.
On Tuesday, Year Five pupils from Cestria Primary School will call into Hermitage Academy in Chester-le-Street to help launch the school’s own rocket.
Before they can help the rocket blast off, younger pupils must first crack the launch codes hidden around the school.
Students will have to use GPS tracking to find the clues, then decode them using their computer skills.
John Duggan, head of ICT and computer science at the Hermitage Academy, said: “These activities are a great way for us to engage with primary students and to promote the subject of computer science.
“The students will be using new technologies and some of the key concepts of computer science to launch the first Hermitage Academy rocket."
Two groups of students from Cestria Primary School will spend half a day each with the Computing and ICT department.
They will spend half of their session time learning how computers communicate and how to read binary code and the second half will be finding the clues for to the launch code.
