A SCHEME to get revellers home safely after a night out could be rolled out across north Durham.

Consett Street Friends, which patrols the former steel town’s nightclubs after dark, could be extended to Chester-le-Street.

The church-led group, which won police commendation last month, has also recently secured £300 in funding from local representatives on Durham County Council to carry out its work.

Group spokesman James Colwell said: “Street Friends provide comfort and support to vulnerable people and those who find themselves in need of a friend.

“They wait with those who may be left alone, they also give out flip flops to ladies who may have lost or can no longer stand or walk in their high heeled shoes.

“They also provide bottles of water to those who may need a drink or to those who need rehydrating. They also ring individual’s partners or relatives if needed.”

In May, the group received the Chief Superintendents’ Commendation for its work over the last 18 months in Consett town centre, which was presented by Chief Superintendent Ivan Wood.

He said: “Consett Street Friends is an excellent team of volunteers who give up their own time, generally at weekends, to help others.

“They make a big contribution by helping keep people safe when they are out drinking and socialising in the town centre.

“They help the emergency services and reduce demand on our resources.”

The group is supported by publicans and club owners of Consett, including Wetherspoons and The Demi as well as McDonalds who supply members with fresh hot coffee and drinks to keep them going.

Mr Colwell added: “Durham Constabulary have provided access to training opportunities and education on all the issues the team may face when patrolling the streets.

“This has been supplied by PCSO Michelle Williamson and PC Claire McAnaney form the Alcohol Awareness Unit and also from PC Sarah Norman from the Drug Awareness Team.

“This training has been invaluable to all Street Friends in the work they do out in the night time economy. We must also thank all the lovely people who go out in Consett late at night who have welcomed us and been so very supportive of what we do.

“Plans are starting to expand this format and begin a similar project in the area of Chester-le-Street, so watch this space.”

A coffee morning to raise funds is being held at Consett Methodist Church on Saturday, July 11, from 10am to 11.30am.
