AN elderly woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a car as she crossed the road.

The 77-year-old woman suffered head injuries after being knocked down as she crossed Front Street, in Sacriston, near Chester-le-Street.

The accident happened at about 11.40am yesterday (WED) outside the Tesco store in the town.

The woman, who lives locally, suffered head injuries and fractures and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where her condition is described as critical but stable.

The driver of the Renault Clio car involved in the collision, a 22-year-old local man, was uninjured, as was his passenger, a 20-year-old local woman.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: “It is believed that as the Clio pulled out of a side junction opposite Tesco and turned north onto Front Street the pedestrian started to cross the road from east to west.

“The collision occurred as she reached the middle of the road and the Clio driver was completing the turn”.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the force’s collision investigation unit direct on 0191 3752159 or Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting reference DHM-10062015-0140.
