A BUS fitter who followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps in working for the same firm has clocked up 50 years with the company.

Sixty-six-year-old David Cheetham’s half a century with Go North East means he has beaten his father Bill’s 49-year stint and the 46 years’ service of his grandfather, Sam.

His wife Gail also worked for the company for ten years.

He was honoured at the company’s annual Long Service Awards celebration at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

Mr Cheetham, from Whickham, worked at the Chester-le-Street depot, in County Durham.

He said: “I’m really proud of my achievement, not many people make the half century.

“My dad said I’d never beat his 49 years but I did. He was a foreman and died in 2007. I hope he’s looking down on me and is pleased.”

Go North East has 660 buses, employs 2,100 people and carries 71 million passengers a year.
