A COMMUNITY event to encourage people to take up a new sport was held over the weekend.

Introductory sessions, including rowing, golf and cricket, were held at Park View Community Association on Church Chair in Chester-le-Street on Saturday.

The Get Active initiative, funded by Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership, aims to help the town’s residents live a healthier lifestyle.

Andrew Megginson, AAP coordinator, said: “We are always keen to ensure local projects are supported and this was a fantastic way of increasing their membership and helping the clubs showcase what they do to people who are looking to do something active but may not be sure where to go.

“The community has asked for more information on sporting activities so bringing groups together in one event was the perfect way of highlighting what’s on offer.”

Trained professionals were on hand to offer free health checks and sporting were there to encourage people to try something new.
