AN artist is blooming with the launch of her first solo exhibition in a familiar setting.

Naomi Blayney, who works under the moniker English Rose Artwork, has returned to her alma mater to present a selection of her pen and inks of Durham and surrounding areas.

Now based in nearby Chester-le-Street, she said it’s a “privilege” to have been invited to exhibit her work at her former Durham University college, St Cuthbert’s Society.

The busy mother of a toddler grew up nearby and said the North-East, “holds a special place in my heart”.

Hence, many well-known local landmarks feature as subjects for her compositions.

The work on display includes both landscapes and architecture from across the region.

Durham’s Lord Lieutenant, Sue Snowdon, was among the great and good invited to last Friday’s (May 1) preview evening at the society, in the shadow of Durham Cathedral’s eastern facade.

The event was hosted by the college Principal Professor Elizabeth Archibald.

Members of the public are welcome to call in and cast an eye over the distinctive selection of work on show.

The exhibition, which opened to the public on Saturday (May 2), remains on display until Friday, May 29.

It will be open for viewing from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during that period, or “by appointment”.

While visitors run the rule over her work they can also observe the artist working on her latest composition, to give a further insight into how she portrays her subject settings.

St Cuthbert’s Society is at 12 South Bailey, Durham ,with further details of the work on show available via www.englishroseartwork.co.uk, while anyone wishing to book an appointment to view the exhibition outside the opening times should ring the society, during office hours, on 0191-334 3400.
