HOSPICE staff have thanked a Chester-le-Street woman who was the first to sign up online for its latest fund-raising drive.

Lynsey Hayes is supporting the Sunflower Memories Appeal of the Durham-based St Cuthbert’s, which offers people the chance to make a donation in return for a sunflower plaque in memory of a loved one who has died.

The sunflowers, each bearing a name, will be displayed in planters in the hospice garden between June 8 and July 12, after which their owners can take them home.

For Mrs Hayes it was the perfect tribute to her father, John Pattison, who died last March.

She said:“The flowers are on display from 8th June, just a few days before dad’s birthday, until 12th July which would be my parents’ ruby wedding anniversary.

“My dad, John was diagnosed with a brain tumour in August 2013, and sadly passed away in March, 2014.

“Dad has always loved flowers and gardening was one of his favourite hobbies. We gave out sunflower seeds to those who attended dad’s funeral, so they could grow them and think of him. “

Mrs Hayesadded: “Sunflowers are a lovely flower as they are bright, happy and cheerful, just like my dad. I was very close to my dad. He was very loving and kind. He was what you would call the perfect dad, he really was.”

Hospice spokeswoman Kay Welsh said: “We are very grateful to Lynsey and her family.

“The Sunflower Memories Appeal is rapidly becoming popular with many people who want to remember those who brought sunshine into their lives.

“And of course, money raised will help us continue to help people in the community.”
