A DOCTOR smirked and got an erection as he groped a teenage schoolgirl patient’s breasts during a GP appointment, a court heard today (Tuesday, March 3).

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told Durham Crown Court that her encounter with locum GP Unt Tun Maung on September 18, 2013 left her feeling worried, emotional and shocked; it was constantly on her mind; and it kept her awake at night.

Dr Maung is on trial accused of sexually assaulting two teenage girls, one under 16, during GP appointments at medical practices in south Durham and Teesside.

Today (Tuesday), the younger of the two patients gave evidence, telling the jury Dr Maung touched her intimately while her mother was sitting just feet away in an adjoining consultation room.

“I was thinking: should I shout for my mam?” the girl said.

“Why’s he doing that? Why’s there any need for him to go under my bra?

“I was in shock. Everything went blank.

“I looked at him and he was sort of grinning at me.”

Asked whether Dr Maung had “smirked”, the girl agreed.

The girl, who gave evidence via a pre-recorded police interview and was cross-examined over a live video link, went to see Dr Maung with a kidney problem.

He had the teenager lie on an examination couch and put his hands underneath her bra, cupping, squeezing and playing with her breasts, the court heard.

She noticed he had an erection.

The doctor then ended the physical examination and returned to the consultation room.

The court heard he acted as though nothing unusual had happened, though the girl claims he tried to hide his erection from her mother.

The girl told her mother what had happened in the corridor outside and an official complaint was made immediately.

The other charge relates to a similar incident 14 months previously, in July 2012.

Dr Maung, 37, of Chester-le-Street, denies both charges, saying the alleged offences simply did not take place. He is expected to give evidence when the trial continues tomorrow (Wednesday, March 4).
