UNWELCOME doorstep callers are to be given a frosty reception from next month with the launch of a new initiative.
Cold Calling Awareness Zones are being set up in the village of Ouston, near Chester-le-Street, to deter bogus callers, distraction thieves and aggressive salespeople.
The zones are being launched in Ross and Coldstream, in Wentworth Park, and in nearby Turnberry after people in both areas highlighted unwanted visitors as a concern.
Residents will be handed information packs explaining how the scheme works as well as a sticker for their door warning cold callers that they are not welcome.
Lamppost signs will also be put up in the street to make it clear that the area is a Cold Calling Awareness Zone.
The scheme has the backing of residents, police and trading standards officers from Durham County Council.
Joanne Waller, the council’s head of environment, health and consumer protection, said: “We are determined to help residents keep unwanted callers away from their doors and we are working with police to tackle traders who are found to be breaking the law.
“It is important that residents remain on their guard against bogus callers and aggressive salespeople who won’t take no for an answer and this scheme will help to reassure people and give them the confidence to say no.”
