POLICE are appealing for information after a 71-year-old woman was injured by an air rifle.

The incident happened in Sacriston, near Chester-le-Street, at around 5.20pm on Sunday, September 14, when the woman was walking along Front Street by the Londis convenience store.

She was struck on the lower right leg by the pellet.

She had to visit the University Hospital North Durham, Durham City, on the Sunday evening and the following day to have the pellet removed.

She will also need further outpatient appointments.

Police say that at this stage they are unclear whether the incident was an accident or intentional.

Officers have interviewed a local male under caution about the incident.
