YOUNGSTERS took part in a charity event inspired by one of Britain’s best loved children’s authors.

The Dahlicious Dress Up Day was held at Edmondsley Primary School, near Chester-le-Street, today. (Friday, September 26)

Over £100 has been raised and the money will go towards Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity.

Pupils were asked for a donation and allowed to come in dressed as characters from his wide range of classic stories.

Headteacher Angela Rees said there were several Oompa Loompa’s, witches, Matildas and Georges.

She said: “The children have responded really well as the books are very much child focussed.

“It is great way to get them reading and the stories inspire the children. They are still very popular and just as important for young people today.

“The staff said they were up for dressing up too as they remember the books from their own childhood.

“It is the perfect way for our pupils to have a bit of fun, find out more about the characters and help raise money for children who are in hospital.”
