THE Alzheimer’s Society is holding a walk in Chester-le-Street to raise money for its work with dementia sufferers.

North Durham Labour MP Kevan Jones will start and take part in the County Durham Memory Walk around the Riverside Park at 11am on Sunday (September 28).

About 270 walkers have signed up to take part in the event, which last year attracted 100 people and raised £4,500.

Mr Jones said: “I’m delighted to be officially opening and taking part in this year’s County Durham Memory Walk along with my dog Biff and I am very pleased that so many local people have signed up so far.

“There are 6,818 people living with dementia in County Durham and most of us know someone affected by the condition.

“It is essential that we continue to raise awareness and understanding of dementia and I would encourage anyone living locally to join me and take part in Memory Walk.’

Rebecca Scott, the Alzheimer’s Society community fundraiser for the area, said: “This year’s Memory Walk is going to be the biggest and best we’ve seen in County Durham.

“We already have 268 people registered to take part and £1,000 already raised so it will be hugely successful day in more ways than one.

“The walk is for all generations of people who want to walk and remember the person they may have lost to dementia.

“It is a very emotional event which brings friends and family together, united in their efforts to raise awareness and sponsorship to fight dementia. “

Walkers can choose one-mile or three-mile routes.

The walk will start from the park’s main car park and walkers can sign up on the day from 10am.
