A MAN has died after being struck by a train on the East Coast Mainline in County Durham this morning.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said officers were called to the Ouston Junction, in Chester- le-Street, after a report that a man had been hit by a train.

The spokesman said: “Officers from BTP and Durham Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 10.50am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from the North East Ambulances Service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers will now be working to establish the identity of the man and the circumstances surrounding his death.

“The train involved was the 10.35 Newcastle to Reading (CrossCountry) service.”

The line was handed back to Network Rail at noon.

A spokesman for the East Coast Trains said: “It only really affected services for just over an hour."
