MORE than 700 women have taken part in a hospice’s midnight walk, raising around £70,000 for the cause.

The ladies gathered for St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s Midnight Walk around Aykley Heads, Durham City, late on Saturday night.

The event has been run each year since 2007, raising a total of £430,000 for the Merryoaks facility.

This year’s was started by television agony aunt Denise Robertson, who told walkers: "It never ceases to amaze me how incredible you all are."

There was also live entertainment, a fitness warm-up, refreshments and a medal for each participant.

Laura Barker, the hospice’s event co-ordinator, said: "To see such a fantastic amount of women support the hospice, in spite of the weather, is overwhelming.

"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part, to our volunteers and to our sponsors."

Holly Moreland, 15, and Abby Wynn, 16, were the first to complete the 10km route.

Holly said: "We love the atmosphere at the walk and getting involved with everyone.

"It’s nice to know that we’re doing it for such a good cause."

Funds raised will help the hospice provide free care for people with life-limiting illnesses.

The hospice is holding a men’s fundraising walk, entitled Pie and a Pint, on Sunday, July 22. The 5km route will start and end at Durham City Rugby Club.
