A TEAM of crime-fighting detectives who climbed the Three Peaks in 24 hours have raised £1,800 for a suicide prevention charity.

The nine-strong squad from Chester-le-Street criminal investigation department (CID) took on the gruelling challenge in memory of a former colleague and in aid of the If U Care Share Foundation.

The fundraiser was in honour of “one of a kind” John Puckering, a successful crime scene investigator who took his own life three years ago.

Detective Constable Steve Gothard, said: “His daughter Katie was supported by If U Care Share after his death. It is a fantastic service.

“CID investigate all suicides and so we routinely work with the charity by referring families to them for advice and support.

“We see first-hand the vital work which they do to help families.”

The team who climbed the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales on June 22 were DC Steve Gothard, Detective Sergeant Scott Jameson, DC Joanne Days and her husband Steve, DC Jacklyn Laws and her husband Shawn, DC Matt Bartsch, former PC Karen Forster and former sergeant Dave Forster provided support along the way.

Speaking of the feat, DC Gothard said: “It was the best experience and one we won’t forget. It was a significant personal challenge for us all and we pulled each other through.

“Thanks so much to everybody who donated. Your support was above and beyond what we expected.

“We’d also like to thank Enterprise Rent-A-Car for stepping up at the last minute to provide us with transport and Shelley Spence from admin for her support too.”

Sam Hunter, of the If U Care Share foundation, said: “We are truly grateful the continued support of Durham Constabulary and the Chester-le-Street CID team.

“Their efforts in memory of John have been both inspiring and inspirational. The challenge provides a fitting tribute from his friends and colleagues.

“The funds raised by the team will allow us to provide support to those at risk of suicide or bereaved by suicide within Durham.”

DC Gothard will now take on the Great North Run in aid of If U Care Share.
