PEOPLE who have not ridden a bike for a while are being encouraged to get back in the saddle.

Free Back on your Bike courses offer cycling advice and basic maintenance demonstrations.

They are designed to build the participants’ confidence to ride the bike, progressing from cycling in a quiet traffic free environment, to eventually cycling on quiet roads.

Bikes and helmets can be provided free of charge.

Durham County Council’s physical activity officer Stephen Clough said: “Regular cycling has a number of health benefits and is the perfect excuse to get out in the fresh air and meet new people.”

The next four week course starts at the Glebe Centre in Murton on Thursday August 16, from 10am to 12noon.
