A CENOTAPH has been repaired and refurbished to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
The Royal British Legion has been working with students from Derwentside College at the war memorial on Medomsley Road.
Students have fabricated the steel and Harelaw Sawmill helped with the timber to repair the benches.
Consett branch chairman Simon Owen said: “Andrew McKenna and Ken Bailey made sure the memorial was ready, relaying gravel and tidying the memorial as they took away old rotting benches and reinstalled the new ones.
“This has been a fantastic community project and we thank everyone involved.”
At the weekend, the branch hosted the Great War Memorial Match between the British Army North 11 and Consett AFC at Delves Lane, with the home side winning 3-1.
The branch has also unveiled three memorial benches for the public in Consett and Blackhill Park.
Mr Owen said: “The reaction from the public for the benches has been overwhelming.”
