PUPILS from five primary schools have taken part in road safety workshops as part of the Slow to 20 for Safer Streets initiative.
Year 4 pupils from Neville’s Cross Primary School, Durham; Westlea Primary School, Seaham; Stanley Crook Primary School; Shotton Hall Primary School, Peterlee; and Ropery Walk Primary School, Seaham; were taught the importance of safe pedestrian behaviour, independent travel and playing outside safely.
Durham County Council’s road safety team commissioned Konflux Theatre in Education to deliver road safety-themed Play in a Day workshops to support the initiative.
Drama facilitator Jonny Dixon worked with 20 to 30 pupils from each school, leading them through a series of activities designed to develop drama skills and team building.
The children were coached through a script, which highlighted important road safety themes such as in-car safety, using public transport, safer cycling behaviour and the importance of slower speeds to reduce road casualties.
All pupils contributed to the play which culminated in a performance in front of the whole school. This was followed by a road safety talk.
