A MAN has been taken to hospital after an Iceland van overturned in Sherburn Village.

The van was travelling east along Front Street at about 1.20pm when it left the road, struck a street light and overturned before coming to rest on its driver's side.

A section of the road was closed in both directions for two hours but has now been reopened.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to a one-vehicle collision whereby a white Mercedes van hit a lamppost and overturned outside of an address at Hallgarth Villas, in Sherburn Village. The accident occurred at around 1.25pm this afternoon,

"The driver of the van suffered minor injuries. Workers from Durham County Council's Highways Department attended the scene and removed the lamppost."

A spokesperson for the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call to an address at Hallgarth Villas, in Sherburn Village, at 1.27pm. 

"The call was to a van which had hit a lamppost and came to rest on its side.

"Two appliances from Durham attended the scene. Firefighters used cutting equipment to extract a man from the vehicle. He was treated by ambulance staff."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We sent a double-crewed ambulance to the scene of the accident. A male adult was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham."
