A PRIMARY School football team are a step closer to playing at Wembley after winning a local tournament.

The team from Easington Colliery Primary School came out on top in the six-a-side tournament hosted by Sunderland Football Club as part of the EFL Kids Cup.

More than 30 primary schools took part in the competition at Silksworth Sports Complex for the chance to represent the Black Cats.

Easington Colliery beat Toner Avenue Primary School, from Hebburn, in the final and will now travel to Leeds United Elland Road in March to face under 11 sides from other northern-based Championship clubs.

The winners of that will get to play for the best teams in the southern section at Wembley.

The team from Easington said: “We’re buzzing after winning the tournament and looking forward to a really good trip to Leeds United. We’re very excited. We’re confident and we think we’ve got a good chance of getting to Wembley.”

Helen Byrne, from the Foundation of Light, added: “The main aim today was to get as many kids as possible playing. We had over 240 youngsters from over 30 schools which was fantastic to see.”
