A CHARITY walk has been held to raise money to send a little girl with a rare form of cancer to Disneyland Paris.

Family and friends of eight-year-old Penny Armstrong braved freezing conditions on Sunday morning.

The youngster, from Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, who is being treated for a Wilms Tumour is due to have an operation on her liver on Tuesday.

But around 50 people turned up in support of ‘Team Penny’ at the lake at Saltwell Park to give her a dream holidays once her chemotherapy and radiotherapy is over.

Friends and schools mates from Portabello Primary School have also been helping to raise funds.

County Durham fundraiser Mark Solan, who took part in the walk, has signed Newcastle United football and Newcastle Falcons rugby shirts which he is auctioning on his trust page.

Penny was first diagnosed with Wilms Tumour in her kidney in 2014 and underwent treatment in the RVI in Newcastle.

In August this year, doctors told her mum they had found a tumour in her liver and she is being treated following a meeting with a specialist from Great Ormond Street in London.

Walk organiser Jean Hay, who is friends with Penny’s mother, Lynsie Armstrong, said: “We decided to do the walk because Penny’s cancer has returned after two years in remission.

“Lots of friends were tired of sitting at home and feeling so sad at what little Penny and her Mam were having to go through again so decided to do something constructive.

“Penny would really like to visit Disneyland when she is well so we are aiming to pay for that for her and her family.”
