BBC news presenter Colin Briggs will be the special guest at a Carols For Christmas event.

The musical evening takes place at Elvet Methodist Church, in Durham on December 12 at 7pm to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The Look North presenter will be joined by Tynemouth dentist Malcolm Joyce, who last year donated £1m to the charity in memory of his late wife.

The dementia-friendly evening will feature readings, winter treats and sing-along songs and will be staffed by specially-trained volunteers.

Mr Briggs, who will deliver a special reading at the event, said: “Dementia devastates lives. Research shows that 35,000 people in the North East have a form of dementia and, like with a lot of conditions, sadly, there’s no silver bullet solution, but a great deal of slog.

“We are getting there, but it takes time and inevitably money, which is why evenings like this not only help raise funds, but also provide a respite of joy on both sides.

“I’m only glad I can help out.”

Mr Joyce, who earlier this month he was named Philanthropist of the Year by Spear’s Magazine, added: “I’m thrilled to have been asked to take part in this event.

“Donating money to Alzheimer’s Society is the best thing I’ve ever done – I’ve never regretted it for a moment.

“But I didn’t just want to write a cheque and walk away. I’m happy to help raise awareness of dementia whenever I get the opportunity.”

Lucy King, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in the North East, said: “We’re in for a real treat this year in the historic and beautiful setting of Elvet Methodist Church.

“We’re hoping people will bring along the whole family for what promises to be a truly uplifting evening”.Tickets for the event cost £10 for an adult, £3 for a child under nine and £15 for a combined ticket for a person with dementia and their carer.
