A LOLLIPOP lady has retired after helping children cross the road safely for almost 30 years.

Doreen Rowntree, 71, spent her last day on the crossing, near Belmont Community School, in Durham, today.

She was presented with flowers, cards and gifts from pupils, staff and parents at a special assembly.

Mrs Rowntree, of Hawthorn Road, Carrville, said: “I love the children and their mothers. They have all come to see me before I go. They have given me a wonderful send off.

“What has been nice is seeing people who I used to help across the road when they were little but they are bringing their own children to school.

“They gave me a beautiful watch and a picture of a lollipop lady. I have got loads of presents off the children.”

Mrs Rowntree, plans to spend more time with her husband, Allan, daughter Julie, and seven-year-old granddaughter, Alesha.

She also plans to take coach holidays to see more of the country.

She added: “I have loved coming to work. It has never been difficult.

“It has been very emotional all week. I will miss it.”
