A CAT has been badly injured after being shot by what is believed to be an air rifle.
The incident happened in the Blackhall Rocks area of east Durham, sometime on Saturday.
Durham Constabulary posted on its Facebook page: "The injury to the cat is significant and will cost in excess of £1,000 in veterinary fees to treat.
"The owners of the cat, called Maisy, are appalled that their family pet has been targeted in such a thoughtless and callous way."
The owner, John Thomas, posted on Facebook: "Anyone in Blackhall (especially Brockwell/Hesleden road area) please keep an eye on your cats, some sick bastard has decided to shoot our harmless and defenceless cat Maisy.
"It must be with a fairly high powered air rifle, cos it's gone in one side and passed through to the other. But still had the force to snap her back leg.
"Luckily it appears that she will survive and recover, it's somehow missed all her internal organs.
"But it's left her needing her rear leg rebuilding with pins etc, and us with a bill for just under £1000.
"The police have been informed, but if anyone has any information to who thinks it's ok to target a defenceless animal and much loved family pet I would appreciate it."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting crime number CRI00068222.
