DISPLAY plans took to the air this morning to test the skies for this year’s Sunderland International Airshow.

Some of the world’s most iconic aircraft and exciting aerial display teams started to arriving in the region to prepare for the show.

First to practice their manoeuvres were the Blades display team and the OV-10 Bronco, who took some willing volunteers up as passengers.

These included Sunderland City Council deputy leader Councillor Harry Trueman.

He said: “It was a fantastic experience, being on board helps you appreciate even more the tremendous speeds these aircraft fly at and the amazing skills of the pilots who fly them.

“We are very lucky our airshow continues to attract some of the finest aerial display teams in the world.

“From the RAF Falcons and the Tigers parachute display teams, to the Red Arrows, Typhoon and Battle of Britain Memorial flight, there is something for everybody.”

Opening this year’s weekend display programme at 11am tomorrow is one of Sunderland International Airshow’s most popular and regular attractions, the RAF Falcons Display Team.

Appearing at his third show, Sergeant Paul Smith said: “We are all very much looking forward to opening this year’s airshow on Saturday.

“Each time we jump here, the crowds in Sunderland give us a great welcome which we all really appreciate.

“ Fingers crossed for good weather.”

The weekend display programme follows an exciting evening last night, with a mixture of music from the stage at Cliffe Park, and flying display followed by a firework finale.

Organisers have warned that all appearances are subject to technical, weather and other constraints.
