A CHARITY is appealing for puppy walkers to help look after its new arrivals for the first months of their lives.

Guide Dogs needs people in Durham, Lanchester and Consett to look after its new puppies and help them on their way to becoming trusted companions for people with sight loss.

The puppies will need homes from May until they are 14 months old.

Graham McKinney, Guide Dogs puppy training supervisor said: “This volunteer role has its challenges as volunteers have the puppies in their homes 24/7 from seven weeks until about 14 months and can’t leave the dog for more than a couple of hours a day.

"They will also need to commit one to one time each week to do training activities with the pup. However, it is hugely rewarding to see the dog develop and know that they will eventually go on to make a life changing difference to someone with sight loss.”

Potential volunteers will need a secure enclose private garden or yard with a hard area and time and patience to socialise the pup and teach essential commands.

Guide Dogs covers vet bills and food whilst providing one to one support through Mr McKinney and through a monthly puppy class.
