A COMMUNITY has rallied together to help a family raise almost £2,000 for cancer nurses.

Angela Leary, from Sherburn village, organised the music night to raise money in memory of her dad, Stan Whitfield.

The event at Sherburn Village Club, which was held on Friday, has so far raised around £1,890 for the Marie Curie Rapid Response team, which is based at St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham.

Mrs Leary said: “I’m just overwhelmed by all the support we’ve had. It’s the first night we’ve done so it has taken a lot of planning everything together but everyone has donated things for free. We haven’t had to pay for anything.

“It was a fab night and some of the nurses came. The club was absolutely full.”

Four Letter Word, Babe Magnet and Brian Burgess all performed free of charge.

The Marie Curie nurses looked after Mr Whitfield for around two years before his death in November 2015.

Mr Whitfield had suffered from COPD for 12 years and was diagnosed with cancer in the weeks before his death.

The family has previously raised £3,000 for the team in his memory.
