AN air cadet has made his first solo flight at the age of 17.

Adam Watson, a cadet with 1507 (Chester-le-Street) Squadron, was one of 186 young people selected for the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme and spent two weeks at Tayside Aviation in Dundee.

Over that time he received 12 hours of free flying training, learning the basics of flying the 2-seater Aquila 211, culminating in the opportunity to undertake a solo flight.

He said, “It was one of the best experiences of my life as flying is my passion and I was given the opportunity to meet other Cadets from across the UK.

“At the very end of the course I climbed into the Aquila for what was my last dual flight for a solo check. Everything went perfectly and I was the only member of my course to fly solo.

“It was the best feeling in the world! I would recommend any cadet seriously interested in becoming a pilot to put their name forward.”

Flight Lieutenant Mathew Burton, Squadron Commander of 1507 Squadron, said, “I am extremely proud of what Sgt Watson has achieved.

“The Air Training Corps offers this opportunity to suitable cadets on a yearly basis and with the aim of becoming a pilot when he is older he has taken full advantage of what the Air Cadets has to offer”.

Anyone aged 12 to 17 with an interest in joining the Chester-le-Street based squadron should call 0191-389-0949.
