A MAN who repeatedly left waste in the back lane behind his home despite warnings has been ordered to pay £264 in a fine and costs.

Peterlee magistrates heard how Durham County Council dealt with three incidents in which Shane McCarroll, 23, left waste behind his Stanley home, from October last year to January.

McCarroll, of Elm Street, South Moor, did not heed warnings given after the first and second incidents.

He was taken to court by the council for depositing controlled waste, and failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice, both related to the third incident.

The defendant pleaded guilty to both, telling magistrates he had asked his landlord to help him dispose of waste, without success.

McCarroll claimed collection teams had taken his rubbish away for a period but then stopped.

He told the court he left only household waste in the back lane and that other people must have added items.

McCarroll said he regretted his ‘out of character’ actions which he was aware resulted in loss of amenity to himself and his neighbours.

He added he had learnt his lesson and would not be dumping waste again.

Ian Hoult, the council’s neighbourhood protection manager, said: “This case should act as a warning that we will take action against anyone blighting our environment.”
